In the Western European Mediterranean area, we demonstrated for the first time that the ozone control measures are effective at rural sites, while ozone concentrations are still increasing in the cities over the period 2000-2010. This result is challenging the traditional knowledge about ozone pollution as a minor air quality issue in urban atmospheres. |

PresentationHigh ground-level ozone concentrations are typical of Mediterranean climates. Plant exposure to this oxidant is known to reduce carbon assimilation. We analyzed long-term continuous measurements of environmental and eco-physiological parameters at three Mediterranean ecosystems. We found that reduction in carbon assimilation was more related to stomatal ozone deposition than to ozone concentration. These results highlight the importance of plant adaptation/sensitivity under field conditions, and the importance of continuous long-term measurements to explain ozone damage to real-world forests and calculate metrics for ozone-risk assessment. |
